Marriage Visa in Thailand

This explains the marriage visa in Thailand for you. If you are an expat or foreigner in Thailand and married to a Thai national then you can also apply for a Thai marriage visa if you have registered your marriage in Thailand. If you have another visa then this visa can normally be converted in Thailand to a marriage visa without having to leave the country. There are conditions for the visa to be issued.

Marriage Visa in ThailandThe Thai marriage visa is also known as the Thai “O” visa. This visa is for “Other” reasons for visiting Thailand. It is the most common visa in Thailand next to the tourist visa. This visa can also be used to visit family in Thailand such as your in-laws or your children. The Thai “O” visa can also be extended in Thailand for 12 months if you have a minor child who is a Thai citizen. Most extensions however are for those married to a Thai woman. Note the requirements for the visa to be issued.

The requirements for the Thai marriage visa is as follows. These documents you need to have with you when you apply for the 90 day marriage visa at a Thai Embassy in your country.

  • 1.       Copy of your Thai marriage certificate (both versions);
  • 2.       Also a copy of your Thai wife’s Tabian Baan or “House Papers”;
  • 3.       Copy of your passport;
  • 4.       Copy of your Thai wife’s ID card or Thai passport;

These are the basic documents for the marriage visa which they will require at the Thai Embassy when you apply for the visa. Once you enter Thailand then you will have 90 days to extend this visa for 12 months.


Marriage Visa Documents

The following documents Thai Immigration will require and these documents will also be required when you convert you current visa into a marriage visa.

  • 1.       Copy of your Thai marriage certificate (both versions);
  • 2.       Copy of your Thai wife’s Tabian Baan or “House Papers”;
  • 3.       Also a copy of your passport;
  • 4.       Copy of your Thai wife’s ID card or Thai passport;
  • 5.       Copy of marriage photos or you and your wife together;
  • 6.       Also a copy of your bank account showing 400,000THB or 40,000THB in income per month;
  • 7.       Copy of a map to your house, villa or apartment in Thailand;
  • 8.       Copy of your children birth certificates if they are Thai nationals;

This process takes 30 days to complete so do not wait until the last minute to extend your visa in Thailand. Note that the multiple entry visas are becoming very difficult to obtain in Thailand. Extending your current visa is easier to do. Speak to a lawyer in Phuket or a Lawyer in Bangkok to assist you with this as many would offer a package to register the marriage, convert you current visa and then extend the new marriage visa for 12 months. Much easier to get things done at one place without having to deal with the usual red tape of government departments.
